Meeting with Dr. Ernie Ward, DVM

“Beyond the Degree: Becoming the Best Veterinarian You Can Be” and “Managing the Work-Life Myth: Making Work and Work”

Dr. Ernest Ward, Jr. is the owner of Seaside Animal Care in Calabash, North Carolina, which received the prestigious National Practice of Excellence Award in 1999. Dr. Ward has also received the "Speaker of the Year" Award from the North American Veterinary Conference and is a member of Veterinary Economics' Editorial Advisory Board. Dr. Ward gave us tips on how to present ourselves as professionals at a lunch meeting, followed by a question/ answer forum at dinner about the balance of managing your health, happiness and career.

Meeting with Drs. Michael Leib, Steven Karras and Steve Escobar

“To Intern or Not to Intern”

Dr. Leib, professor at VMRCVM, explained the general reasons for doing an internship post-graduation, including the application process, selection criteria and the matching process. Dr. Escobar, from Springfield Vet Center and past VVMA president, discussed what must be considered when deciding to do an internship, including the impact on family, marital strain and financial implications. Dr. Steve Karras, from Cave Spring Veterinary Clinic and Vice President of the VVMA, talked about his experiences doing an internship and how it has factored into the rest of his career.

Meeting with Dr. Karen Cornell

“Constructive Conflict- Is it Possible?”

Dr. Karen Cornell, DVM, PhD, DACVS, discussed how to recognize, address and, most importantly, resolve conflict in an appropriate and helpful manner. Dr. Cornell is an Associate Professor and Chief of Staff of Surgery at the University of Georgia CVM and has taught communication techniques at the Veterinary Leadership Experienced and with the Bayer Communication Modules. Dr. Cornell has practical experiences with a great sense of humor.

“Dr. Mom: Pregnancy in the Workplace”

Our first Saturday seminar! Included were three segments, each focusing on a different topic. The first hour, presented by Dr. Ava Stanczak, Pediatric Chair VCOM, addressed health-related concerns specific for our profession and how pregnant women should protect themselves while expecting. The second hour focused on business concerns of maternity leave, insurance and legal liability in regards to the pregnancy of staff. It was presented by Dr. Peggy Rucker, past AAHA President and owner Southwest Virginia Veterinary Services. The third hour was an open panel discussion on balancing work and family life. The participants were: Dr. Stanczak, Dr. Rucker, Dr. Audry Curran from Vinton Animal Hospital, Dr. Kate Hussman owner of Louisa Veterinary Services and Dr. Bonnie Smith, Professor VMRCVM.

Meeting with Speaker Dr. Michael Watts

“Ever thought about opening your own practice or buying into an existing one?”

Dr. Michael Watts, a 2000 VMRCVM graduate and owner of Clevengers Corner Vet Care, discussed the risks and challenges of opening and owning his own practice. Included in the discussion was a breakdown of reasons to open/ build a practice, the general procedure for doing so (including a list of licenses/ permits needed) and various resources he turned to for help.
