is a PhD student in the Department
of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology. Her dissertation involves the
effects of arsenic on DNA damage repair in urinary bladder transitional
cells. She became interested in arsenic because the mechanism through which
arsenic induces cancer was unknown and arsenic intoxication existed in parts
of her home country, Taiwan. High arsenic concentrations in drinking water
are very prominent in some Asian countries, and have been reported in the
western and northeastern United States. Amy's research interests include
non-genotoxic carcinogens and environmental contaminations and how they
actually affect organisms. Her defense is expected in late July or early
August. When Amy is not working in the lab, she enjoys hiking, ballroom
dancing, cooking and baking, rock climbing, and is currently training to
race-walk a half marathon in the mountains of West Virginia. One of her
main interests is photography; particularly landscape, wildlife, and plant
photography. Her main influence in starting photography is her father, a
famous wild bird photographer in Taiwan. Amy maintains her own web
page about her professional work that you can check out if you wish
to find out more about her. Names in the News CONGRATULATIONS

Amy
has also been involved in several local and national professional organizations.
As a student representative from the National Capital Chapter of Society
of Toxicology (SOT), Amy organized a student day, resulting in a new Chapter
tradition. At the national level, she organized and chaired a round table
discussion in a national SOT annual meeting, as well as several student-orientated
events. For those who have been at VMRCVM since 2000/2001, you may remember
that Amy co-chaired the education committee in VMS GSA and organized several
seminars per semester.
