Trap-Neuter-Release Program
A recent AWC campus-wide survey determined that there are at least 50 feral cats on the Virginia Tech Campus.
These homeless cats are likely the result of negligent owner abandonment by
students and neighbors of the university.
Feral cats living in warm climates can be expected to have 2-3 litters per year. This problem will not go away, and the AWC is taking steps to make a change.
Currently, a proposal is on the table at the Animal Care Committee of Virginia Tech to instate a Trap-Neuter-Release program designed by the Animal Welfare Club.
Program Goals:
- Develop a formal management plan involving Trap, Test, Vaccinate, Alter, & Release.
- Adopt out the healthy, tame cats and kittens through the Animal Welfare Foster Program.
- Understand the feral cat population characteristics and their group dynamics.
- Develop an educational outreach program incorporating the entire campus, informing students and faculty about responsible pet ownership.
- Enhancing veterinary students’ education by performing sterilization procedures under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian.
- We are working with the University to better understand and manage the feral cat situation and help develop a solution.
