March 2008 ICU/Colic Team Schedule
Spring 2008 ICU/Colic Teams
The ICU/Colic teams were started here at the veterinary school in the Spring of 2007 by students eager to gain more hands-on experience in the hospital before 4th year. There are 10 teams, each comprised of five to six 1st and 2nd year students. A team leader is assigned to each team to coordinate arrivals and act as a liaison between staff and students during the emergency. Teams are called “on-call” once every two weeks from 5pm to 12am and come in when the clinicians contact them.
Emergencies include but are not limited to:
- Colics
- Lacerations
- Diarrhea
- Foals
- Fever
Things to keep in mind as a member:
When students are called in, they will be allowed to watch the entire workup process. After a few visits, students may be asked to participate in the workup- if and only if they are ASKED to do so. Keep in mind that the first in priority are the fourth year students who have waited 3 years to get there! Only do what you are asked to do!
In the event that there is a foal that needs to watched, students will each take a 1½ hour shift to sit with it during the 5p-12a time frame. Again, only help the students and nursing staff if they ask for it, and never medicate or treat one of the foals unless a student, doctor, or nurse is present!
Since this is a new program, we hope to gain even more interest next year with the incoming students. If you have any questions, please contact Jaclyn Page, ICU/Colic Teams Founder/Coordinator at jnpage@vt.edu. Thanks for your interest in the teams!
For ICU/Colic Team Members:
Bring with you:
- A clean pair of scrubs with you to each emergency in the event you will be allowed to watch the surgery!
- Your white coat
- Nametag
- Closed toe shoes
